About Red Lion Sq.

This is a place to talk about art. Because I believe that we're all meant to be artists, deep down, and because I believe that being an artist is less about doing a particular thing in a particular way and more about attending to the world around us, most of the art I want to talk about is small and ordinary, the kind that lives out in the world.

I want to talk about what inspires and confounds us. I want to talk about how we bring art into our lives when we have to make our living in some other way. I want to talk about process and purpose, form and function, beauty and truth. I want to talk about art!

About Amy Watkins

Picture
I am a proud jack of all trades, a cultural omnivore, a dabbler. I write poetry and essays. I paint. I make ceramics. I take bad photographs. My favorite artistic thing is combining mediums. I love ekphrastic poetry, and the past few years, I've done a lot of paintings with ceramic pieces attached or paintings that have poems associated with them. I think that's because painting, ceramics, and poetry are all different ways of working out the same ideas.

I have an MFA in Writing from Spalding University. My creative thesis was a collection of poems about growing up in rural central Florida, and my extended critical essay was about the pull between community and solitude in Pablo Neruda and James Wright's poems. Like I said, my inspiration and interests are all over the place. I like to think they come together to make something interesting. At least I have lots to talk about at parties.

I like talking shop. I like hearing about other artists' processes and projects. If you want to share something of yours, email me at amy@redlionsq.com.
