After a couple of exciting nights at the museum, we're back to our usual routine this week--a handful of good poems and a little artsy after party. Both our poets read their own work, and I love their very different and marvelous voices. The three poems John reads will also be published in Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume III: Contemporary Appalachia, from Texas Review Press. In the after party, I expound on a little known art movement that exploded in my living room in 2001. If you're thinking of submitting to Red Lion Square, read our interview with the editors, which was just posted at Duotrope.com. 7 Comments Press play above or right click "Episode 26" below the player and select "save as" to save the episode as an mp3 file to your computer or mp3 player. This week, we conclude our coverage of the poetry readings at the Orlando Museum of Art's 1st Thursday event on December 2, 2010. The theme was "Life Out of Chaos," and poets and visual artists were invited to interpret that theme with works about the convergence of art and science, a challenge all the artists seemed to love. Unfortunately, our recorder cut out midway through this second set of readings, so we missed hearing from the final poet. Trevor, we'll get you in a future episode. In the meantime, we have slam poems from Jay Bradley, Alex Ruiz and Curtis Meyer, hosted by Tod Caviness. Give 'em a big hand, everybody! On December 2, 2010, Red Lion Square had a chance to record poets reading at the 1st Thursdays event at the Orlando Museum of Art. The theme was "Life Out of Chaos," and it showcased visual art inspired by science. Friend of the podcast Jennifer Trapp displayed two exciting mixed media pieces, and eight Orlando-area poets, including your own Amy Watkins read science poems. There was so much good stuff going on that we couldn't fit it all in one episode, so we're splitting it over two weeks so you don't miss anything. This week, we hear from Amy Watkins, Jesse Jay Ross, John Conolley and the consummate poetry host Tod Caviness. Episode 24 - Maureen Doallas and Ken Hada 11/30/2010

We have beautiful poems by Maureen Doallas and Ken Hada. Check out their other projects on the People page. Music also flows at Red Lion Square, and in this week's after party we talk about it with Alex Copeland, the guitar god who does our musical interludes. He reminds us that in music as in poetry, simple can be deceptively difficult. Remember to tell us what you think in the comments here or on Facebook. We love to hear from you! Episode 23 - Jules Archer and Kim Hutchinson 11/23/2010
Press play to listen online or right click "Episode 23" below the player and select "save as" to save the file to your computer or mp3 player. This week's episode includes poems by Jules Archer and Kim Hutchinson. Kim's poem "Flashback" was first published in AmsterdamScriptum. In the after party, we take a look backstage at the unique challenges of recording a poem in a group. Loreen Niewenhuis was gracious enough to let us share outtakes of Amy, Alex and John recording her poem "Woman, Water Tower, Man." The readers would like it known that it's themselves they're laughing at, not Loreen's lovely poem. If you're a poet, why haven't you submitted yet? The poetry is flowing at Red Lion Square this week! We have poems by Karen Greenbaum-Maya and Desmond Kon, very accomplished poets who are also a psychologist and a potter. In the after party, Amy introduces editorial assistant Mistie Watkins, and the Watkins sisters talk about what makes a poem a poem. Want the RLS news as it happens? We're taking a break this week, or rather, I am. We'll be back next week with really great poems and a fascinating after party and all the other sparkly, wonderful things you expect from such sparkly, wonderful people, including our new editorial assistant, Mistie Watkins. In the meantime, here is a brand new link to some of my poems at Dead Mule School of Southern Literature and a link to some of Jae's poems at Perihelion. And here's something just because I like it. It's Halloween at Red Lion Square, or almost Halloween, and we have a great Halloween party for you! First Terry Hummer jams with the musicians at Electric Lotus Music in Phoenix then things get spooky with Sal Buttaci's very appropriate poem. In the after party, there are tricks and treats, so give it a listen...if you dare! Find out more about our authors here. Find out how to submit your work here. Find us on Facebook here. This week, we carve a pumpkin, go dancing and weather a storm, at least metaphorically. Two of this week's poets, Dan Nowak and Barbara Sabol, have chapbooks coming soon from Accents Publishing. Bookmark that link for a lot of great poetry! We also have two guest readers. Barbara's poem "Convection Theories" is read by Cye Watkins, whose songs we have featured in past after parties. Gerry's poems are read by the multi-talented Ian Jones, who also joins Amy Watkins and Alex Copeland in the after party. Ian is an artist who specializes in functional wood-fired pottery. His work is stunningly beautiful, and you can see it (and buy it) here. To learn more about the wood-firing process and see the artist in action, visit his blog at highonfire.wordpress.com. What abstract concept would you try to express in art? What is its "objective correlative"? |
